Competition 'Artist at Work'
Installation Landesgartenschau, Ostfildern
2002
The project was one of several competition entries that were selected for commission at the State Garden Show in Ostfildern, a horticultural exhibition near Stuttgart, Germany, which opened in April 2002.
At an early stage of the garden project, before some of the planting occurred, casts were made of the surfaces of the site. Concrete casts were made from the negative casts and then installed at the original sites.
The cast concrete surfaces have since become part of the garden landscape. They are weathering and the reliefs of the surfaces will be conquered by mosses and other plants.
As time passes, a kind of mini-succession will occur on the concrete surfaces: nature will take over.
The project aims to document and freeze ephemeral conditions at the constantly evolving site of the horticultural exhibition and to manipulate the natural processes occurring at the site.
The project wishes to link the ordering and manipulating activities that manifest themselves in gardening and farming and intends to make them visible.
